Rita FigueroaAfter posting a Rest in Peace for Joe Frazier comment on my wall, I received a response stating ”Is it worth fighting and ruining your body like Frazier did??? To only live less than 80 years…no.”

I bet there are many opinions about this topic. Here’s mine: As a fighter, and one that was critically injured in a fight, I would disagree with the above statement. Boxing has allowed me many experiences along the way. Many good, many bad.

What I will say, is that as a fighter, and as a friend of many fighters, the comeraderie and bond we all share as fighters is unmatched. Some of the people closest to me I have met because of boxing/martial arts. The opportunities presented to me, the fans, friends and even haters along the way…To me, it is well worth the price I have paid. With that being said, I am sure there are many that agree, disagree, or maybe never thought much about it.

What are your thoughts? Fighters (all combat sports), non-fighters, fans, coaches, managers, promoters…it will be interesting to see the different opinions we receive.

**IMPORTANT NOTE** – This is no disrespect to anyone who has or knows someone that has lost their life inside the ring. This is about life AFTER boxing and how it MAY diminish a fighters future outside the ring and if boxing is “worth” it.

Fighters are much like Harley riders….we may compete and fight amongst ourselves, but when push comes to shove – we got each others backs!

This does not mean continuing to fight much longer than a fighter should and risk injury, being a vegetable etc – this is regarding the sport in general. Knowing there may be consequences in the future, if you are a fighter, is it worth it to be a fighter?

  2. i think fighting is worth every step of the way if it were not for boxing i would be dead or locked up i would not take nothing back down this path ive have taken.

Some people who live their entire lives in a comfortable place, not knowing about a personal high achievement from physical endeavor, some people never have left the neighborhood, city, state, time zone, region, country, or hemisphere. I grew up in a just above the poverty line and I have also traveled the world and experienced victory and loss in other countries, learned various martial arts from instructors from abroad. There are people that will judge against what we do as pugilistic athletes in our endeavor in pursuit of a personal achievement, and yet will live vicariously thru us in secrecy behind closed doors. This for all of those that do what is not expected nor accepted, but yet admired for doing so on our own.
    GOD BLESS all of you!

longevity is over rated even more soo than money . all the cliche’s apply. outliving your money sucks but outliving your health is far worse .joe fraizer apparently outlived his money and meet his fate expediantly . ali has long outlived his health and too me is a reminder that there are worse things than death . in the end ali has paid a much greater price in my book . again – all the clich’s apply
